Crews Working To Bring Down 2nd Section Of Civic Arena Roof
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – While the legal battles fell short to save the Civic Arena, the old home of the Penguins isn't going down without a fight.
Demolition crews brought down the first of eight sections of the Civic Arena's roof on Saturday. The goal is to bring down one section a week, but crews are having trouble getting the second section to break free.
Attempts to bring down the second section this week have proven unsuccessful, but crews will be back at it on Wednesday.
Crews have made more strategic cuts to some beams and will be using extra cables to try and get the second section to come down.
There's not much left inside the 51-year-old arena, the skyboxes are gone along with most of the seats.
If all goes according to plan, the Civic Arena will be nothing more than a memory by the end of April or early May.
Steve Shamber couldn't help but reflect on his proudest moments as a parent as he gawked at the old Civic Arena in her demolition death throws.
"My kid skated about two weeks before it closed on that ice. He skated where Sidney Crosby skated," Steve Shamber said.
The debate on what will replace the arena has already started. The Pittsburgh Penguins have development rights to the 28-acre site.
Several community groups and organizations are calling for a plan that makes up for the wrongs they say were done when homes and businesses were taken to build the arena.
