Crews Trying To Solve Lighting Mystery At CONSOL Energy Center
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There appears to be a glitch affecting the lights at the CONSOL Energy Center.
The first time it happened was during the Capitals game on Monday.
Crews consulted the computer that runs the lights.
"Computer spit out exactly what turned the lights off, so we thought we corrected that problem," Jay Roberts, general manager of the CONSOL Energy Center, said.
It was déjà vu during the San Jose game Wednesday night.
"It happened again. So it was obviously not what the computer said it was that turned off the lights," Roberts said. "So now they're working on what in the system caused it."
What makes the problem more baffling is that crews were unable to reproduce the lighting problem after the first time.
Each light has a shutter that is lowered in front of it during intermissions.
"It adds to ambiance during the intermission that it's not the full brightness," Roberts explained.
When the shutters came down, the lights went off for some unknown reason. In both cases, they were immediately recycled, but the process of cooling down the lights and then re-energizing the lights takes about 15 minutes.
"It's a little embarrassing, but fortunately the game went on and we were able to make everything happen with only a slight delay," Roberts said.
The companies that designed and installed the lighting system are hard at working diagnosing the problem.
