Crews Putting Finishing Touches On Mellon Square Renovations

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Landscaping crews braved the rain today in Downtown Pittsburgh. They were planting flowers and shrubs in Mellon Square.

The long-time renovation project at the park is now wrapping up.

It's been nearly three years since people have been able to go to Mellon Square and really, fully enjoy the park.

That's about to change, thanks to a lot of planning and a lot of hard work.

Right now, it's fenced off and off limits, but soon, the renovations will be complete and it will up and running.

"We're just a couple of weeks away now from filling the fountains and taking down the construction fence, cleaning everything up," Phil Gruszka, of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, said.

The rain kept contractors away, but landscaping crews took advantage of the soggy weather and planted rows and rows of flowers and shrubs.

The park will have a lot of evergreen plants and colorful annual flowers.

"It's going to be so amazing how many plants were going to be having. It's just going to boost and boom with color," Jaclyn Bruschi, of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, said.

Other highlights of the revamped park will include benches all around and two fountains. One will be right in the center, while the other cascading fountain will be in the corner.

Designing the landmark park, while keeping its rich history intact, took some time.

"It's as complicated as putting up a structure, an apartment building, or a condominium complex. There is a very complex set of systems here and they have to interact perfectly for this park to function as designed," Gruszka said.

Crews will be busy over the next few weeks Then, there is a big grand opening celebration on May 29.
