Truckloads Of Debris Removed After Landslide Threatens South Side Slopes Homes
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A landslide threatened some homes on Pittsburgh's South Side Slopes over the weekend.
Living on the South Side Slopes, Michelle Jordan takes in a wonderful view of the Pittsburgh skyline every morning.
But it's not the view from the front of her home that she's thinking about as of late, it's a landslide in the back.
"Mid-February, the street above us, Newtown Street started to collapse, and it pushed the hillside down behind three of the homes here on Windom," said Jordan.
Jordan said her home is one of the older homes on Windom Street, and it wasn't threatened until the street above began to collapse.
"I'm one house away from the slide, but as the street continued to collapse, mine is at risk as well," she said. "So, I'm thrilled to see the city here, they've been here since [Sunday] morning. They worked through the night."
Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works hired a contractor to excavate the land, removing the dirt, mud and debris.
"It was pressing against the homes, so they were concerned about the stability of the homes," said Jordan as she watched crews working Monday morning.
By early Monday, several truckloads of debris had been removed. Meanwhile, Guy Costa, chief operations officer for the city of Pittsburgh, said engineers are looking at the options for Newton Street, to make sure it doesn't collapse again.
Jordan says she feels optimistic about their success.
"I'm confident and hopeful that they'll correct the situation," she said. "They've been very responsive."
