New Stanton Man Killed, 4 Injured In Rostraver Crash
ROSTRAVER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- State police in Belle Vernon are investigating a violent two-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 that left one person dead and sent four others, including a child, to hospital Wednesday morning in Westmoreland County.
The crash happened just after 9:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 at the Route 51 on-ramp in Rostraver Township.
The Westmoreland County Coroner's Office and state police have identified the victim as 64-year-old Frank Armstrong of New Stanton. He was pronounced dead at the scene just after 11 a.m. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
According to investigators, 38-year-old Gary King of Belle Vernon was headed westbound on I-70 when his car reportedly veered off the road and into the Route 51 on-ramp lane where it hit Armstrong's vehicle.
Authorities say Armstrong was attempting to merger onto the westbound lanes of I-70 when the crash happened.
King was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. His passenger, a 2-year-old boy, was also transported by medical helicopter to Children's Hospital, state police said.
They both suffered minor injuries.
The passengers in Armstrong's vehicle, identified as 64-year-old Linda Armstrong of New Stanton and 91-year-old Freda Rorke of West Newton, were also taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital by medical helicopter.
State police say Rorke remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Linda Armstrong was being treated for minor injuries and is expected to be released sometime today or Thursday, officials said.
State police continue to investigate the accident.
