Woman, 3 Children Escape Sheraden House Fire

SHERADEN (KDKA) --- Emergency crews were called to a fire in Pittsburgh's Sheraden section early Friday morning.

The fire started in a home in the 3100 block of Faronia Street around 4 a.m. All residents are accounted for, but the home sustained serious damage.

The woman who lives in the home that caught on fire, believes the fire started in the kitchen. She credits her daughter, who first smelled the smoke, for making sure everyone got out safely.

"I think my daughter did everything, like she was the savior, she came and woke us all up," she said.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, described the frightful moments when she was awakened by her daughter.

"It was already a full fire in the kitchen," the woman told KDKA's Lisa Washington. "I wanted to put the fire out with water or something, but there was nowhere to get water from. So, we opened the front to get the kids out. When we opened the front door, the fire expanded, it expanded immediately. "

Dozens of firefighters worked to put out the flames.

Marvin Paul, who lives a few doors down, shared cell phone video with KDKA, showing the huge flames covering the home. Paul opened his doors to the family of five, who escaped with only the clothes they were wearing.

"They didn't have no shoes, no socks, no nothing, just standing in the street," said Paul.

He said it was a miracle the family, including three children, made it out safely.

"I'm glad everybody got out," Paul said. "I'm really glad about that. I don't know how they did, but they did. Thank God, because when I [saw] it, the way those flames were, if you were in there you were done."

The mother believes everything is lost.

"From what I've seen, everything is destroyed. There's nothing left in the house. The windows were busting, the walls were melting, you could hear thing exploding cracking," she said.

The Red Cross is assisting the family. Meanwhile, Paul says he was happy to lend a helping hand in his neighbors' time of need.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
