Route 22 Crash Kills 1, Injures Another
MURRYSVILLE (KDKA) -- Police are looking into why a car ran off the road, hit a pole and flipped on its side in Murrysville Wednesday night.
One man was killed and another person was injured as a result of the crash on Route 22 near Buena Vista Drive around 11 p.m.
The Westmoreland County Coroner says Brian Spoly, 21, of Loyalhanna Township, died of blunt force injuries to his head, neck and chest.
Another person in the car was rushed to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville.
The coroner says for some unknown reason, the car left the road, struck a utility pole and came to rest on the driver's side door.
"Upon our arrival we observed a single vehicle, laying on the driver's side," said Chief Thomas Seefeld, of Murrysville Police. "The investigation revealed the vehicle struck a utility pole. The driver was deceased, a passenger was entrapped and extricated by the fire department."
Spoly was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Toxicology results won't be available for several weeks.
"At this point we believe speed played a factor, and we're also looking at alcohol to see if that played a role in this accident," said Chief Seefeld.
An autopsy is expected to be complete sometime later today, but it could be a week or two before toxicology results are returned.
Murrysville Police continue to investigate the cause.
