Couple Spooks Facebook With Photos Of Abandoned Places
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Abandoned buildings. Graveyards. Underground tunnels. Those are the settings for countless Halloween fables. Such places set the tone for a Facebook page focusing on western Pennsylvania.
Jim Percy and his wife, Holly Harris, have thousands of followers, on a site called "Abandoned, Old and Interesting Places."
"People see these photos," Percy says, "and then it gives them memories of what used to be. And then, it's a lot of sharing, too."
Jim and Holly, who own a pizza shop in Pleasant Hills, spend their spare time on roads less traveled. The current theme, of course, is Halloween.
The page is filled with photos of abandoned buildings, and graveyards, like the one they visited in Perryopolis.
"It is so dead quiet there," Holly says, "When you go there, it is almost too quiet. It's eerie. It's peaceful, but eerie. Kind of wonder what's going on with that."
They re-visit a little used tunnel, on Curry Hollow Road in West Mifflin. Their footsteps echo on the old brick road, as stonework of the old Union Railroad withstands the test of time.
A short hop down the road, they point out a narrow opening in the side of a hill, covered by a concrete slab. There are times when Jim could swear he hears the hollow sound of barking, emanating from the opening, just below the slab.
"There's no house within about a half a mile of here," he says. "And no yards. Nothing. So what is it? Where is it coming from?"
