Construction Begins On South Side Rink
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Just in time for the holiday season, construction got underway today on an NHL-sized rink that will be open to the public.
Built by the Pittsburgh Penguins, the rink is being constructed in a parking lot near Sidney and South 26th Streets on Pittsburgh's South Side.
Popular last year during the Winter Classic, the community rink – which was then located near Heinz Field — became a favorite for Pittsburghers to enjoy an outdoor skate.
Organizers moved the rink to South Side this year in order to keep the rink open longer without conflicts such as football games.
