Concerns Growing Over Ice Jam On Allegheny River In Parker
PARKER (KDKA) -- There are new concerns about the ice jams on the Allegheny River in Armstrong County.
The National Weather Service says the ice is now about a foot thick.
They say it takes a three-foot rise in the river level to break up the ice, but that is not expected to happen any time soon.
Minor flooding has already been reported in the town of Parker.
"Maybe the weekend if it starts to thaw a little bit, we might get a little flooding," Jay Whyte, the owner of Comet Market, said. "If it warms up slowly, it'll move on down; if it's real fast, we could have a lot of stuff coming down and the water would get real high. It could go 10 feet of water."
Emergency crews are warning people to stay off the ice as it's very dangerous.
If there is flooding, only the downtown area of Parker is expected to be affected.
