Community Pitches In To Help South Side Business Dealing With Break-Ins
SOUTH SIDE (KDKA)- The owner of the Commonwealth Press on the South Side said an act of kindness got him all choked up.
Earlier this month, a man broke into the store along East Carson Street, smashing in the window of the front door.
The owner of the shop, Dan Rugh, posted surveillance video of the man inside the store on Facebook. The man hasn't been caught, but the story definitely caught the attention of people in the community.
"So, I just took a picture of the broken glass and I was like I'm getting sick of this. Everybody's like on no, not again and I wasn't trying to feed anything. It was just frustration with that," Rugh said.
Commonwealth Press raised money to repair their front door, and used the left over money to donate to the Pittsburgh Action Against Rape Group charity. But, once again, someone smashed the front door with a brick.
This time, it was the community that stepped forward, sending the owner an anonymous card in the mail. It read:
"We heard about your break-in. That's poop! Because you are an awesome friend and neighbor and business owner and event planner and talent and worker and all around good guy, this one is on us. Take this and fix your door, if you have money left over give it to charity or buy pizza. Thanks for all you do, we love you."
Rugh posted a picture of the card on Facebook. He said he got kind of choked up and was at a loss of words. He went on to say he is eternally grateful to this neighborhood.
"This is the community that I know and this is why I do business here and why I know every business on this street," Rugh said.
