Community Devastated Following Deadly Greene Co. Crash
WAYNESBURG (KDKA) – Local high school students had heavy hearts today, after news spread of a fatal car crash that killed four – including three local teenagers.
The three-vehicle crash happened on Interstate 79 in Greene County Wednesday night.
Six teens in an SUV were traveling northbound when the vehicle crossed over the median, hitting a camper and a motorcycle.
As a result of the crash, 18-year-olds Cullin Frazer and Benjamin Hardy, both of Waynesburg, and 18-year-old Byron Kerr of Carmichaels were killed while traveling in the SUV.
Frazer, who was driving the SUV, was a former student at West Greene High School. Passengers Hardy and Carmichaels were former students of Waynesburg Central High School.
"It's pretty hard to think it could just happen that fast," Jefferson Morgan High School student Ashley Faddis said. "It could be anyone."
Area high schools had grief counselors on call Thursday.
"Anytime you lose it, whether it be a current or former student, it's a tragedy," Matt Blair with Waynesburg Central School District said. "Our hearts, our thoughts, our prayers go out to those families."
Also killed was 47-year-old motorcycle driver Michael Cohen, from Canada.
No one in the camper was injured.
Police are still investigating the cause for the crash and say it could take weeks, or even a month, to determine what happened since the wreckage is so severe.
After the wreck, the three other SUV passengers and a woman who was riding on the motorcycle were transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W. Va.
Authorities say all four survivors will recover and three have already been released from the hospital.
