Columbus Replica Ships Nina & Pinta Sail Into Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It may feel like you've stepped back in time if you are near the rivers in Downtown Pittsburgh for the next few weeks.

Replicas of Christopher Columbus' Nina and Pinta have sailed into Pittsburgh around 6 p.m.

The ships will be docked at Station Square until Oct. 13.

The Nina was built by hand, without the use of power tools and is considered to be the most historically correct Columbus replica ship ever built.

Both ships tour together as a "sailing museum" to educate the public and school children about the early explorers.

The boats drew large crowds when they were docked here in 2009 and 2012.

If you'd like to see the ships in person, admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for students ages 5-16. Kids under the age of 4 are free.

No reservations are necessary and the ships will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

Captain Stephen Sanger joined "The KDKA Morning News" while he was heading up the river to Pittsburgh.

Columbus' other ship was the Santa Maria, so where is it?

"She's a much larger ship than these two and he she would need twice as much water to travel around. Would need about 14 feet where the Nina and Pinta only need 7 feet," Captain Sanger said.
