Woman Killed In Armstrong Co. Coal Truck Accident
MANOR TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A woman was killed when her Jeep Cherokee collided with a coal truck in Armstrong County.
The accident happened just before noon at the Riverside intersection with Route 66 in Manor Township. Southbound traffic was detoured for several hours while police investigated.
Georgia Carol Cornman, 66, of Manorville Borough, Armstrong County, was turning off Route 66 when she was hit by a coal truck operated by Yeager Trucking.
"The female occupant of the Jeep was making a left-hand turn off of 66 into town," Luke Linnon, 2nd Lt. with the Manor Township Fire Department, said. "Truck driver was coming southbound on 66, struck the vehicle."
Cornman died from blunt force trauma before emergency crews arrived. The driver of the coal truck was not injured.
It appears the crash was a tragic accident, but a State police reconstruction team is investigating along with PennDOT.
"We got ahold of PennDOT – their engineers for the area to do a traffic study on the light to make sure the red lights are functioning properly," State Trooper Steve McKillop said.
Linnon says the crash happened at a dangerous intersection.
"We have a lot of traffic with 18-wheelers, coal trucks and everything," he said. "There's a lot of coal mines in this area."
Coal trucks are common along Route 66 in Armstrong County, but State police say drivers need to be aware of every vehicle around them.
