Clint Hurdle 'Firmly Believes' A Female Will Play In MLB
Jackie Robinson Day was celebrated around baseball on April 15th and served as a great reminder to all about the barriers that have been broken down in society and those that remain to be broken in the future.
Among those who used the day to discuss the latter was Pirates' manager Clint Hurdle, who told ESPNW that one day he expects to see a female break the gender barrier in MLB similar to Robinson breaking the color barrier.
"This isn't just an African-American celebration. This is about the opening of doors for everybody," Hurdle said, according to the Beaver County Times. "I still believe firmly there is going to be a day where there is a female player in the big leagues. I got that. Where it goes, I don't know. I don't believe I'll be in the dugout to see it."
Back in March, SI.com's Richard Deitsch asked MLB experts whether or not they think a woman could ever play at the major league level and got mixed responses, some saying they could see it while others thought it was 'highly unlikely.'
Still, at the very least the dialogue is trending in the right direction and with more and more baseball minds thinking like Hurdle, the door should only open even wider for anyone talented enough to make it in the majors. Looking at you, Mo'ne Davis.
