Cleanup Work Continues In Wake Of McKeesport Train Derailment
MCKEESPORT (KDKA) -Crews are continuing to cleanup and make repairs after a train derailment in McKeesport Saturday night.
According to CSX spokesman Gary Sease, 12 cars of a CSX train derailed around 11 p.m. near the Jerome Street Bridge. The train was heading from New Castle to Connellsville.
Crews are now working around the clock to clean up debris and repair the tracks.
CSX officials said the train consisted of 88 cars, four locomotives and contained a mixed freight. At least one car was believed to be carrying scrap metal.
Boaters at the McKeesport Marina watched in horror as sparks flew from the bridge and debris fell into the water.
"We were fishing. We were down at the docks right under the bridge," Ashley Bound said. "All of a sudden, we heard a loud – the train was loud coming across. We heard sparks and a bunch of debris was falling off the bridge and then, I saw the train derail and just a bunch of smoke. They evacuated the docks."
Trains travelling at a reduced speed were allowed to resume use of the other set of tracks on the bridge.
Drivers on River Road had to dodge debris hanging from the bottom of the bridge.
CSX says the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
There are no reported injuries.
