Civil War Exhibit Coming To Heinz History Center
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- "There are all kinds of stories woven into Pennsylvania's Civil War," says Heinz History Center President Andy Masich, as he leads a tour of a new exhibit.
"Pennsylvania's Civil War" marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.
"Not only was it an invasion route in 1863," Masich says, "but it was also the arsenal of the Union."
He says a full-size replica of the world's largest cannon reflects the importance of Pittsburgh industry.
"It took three furnaces pouring 24 hours a day to create the 80-ton barrel of this cannon," Masich said.
He also points out the human cost of Pennsylvania's influence.
"Pennsylvania provided more manpower for the Union Army and Navy than any other state in the Union, except for New York," he said.
The exhibit includes more than 150 artifacts, including a life mask of Abraham Lincoln, made by a Pittsburgh man weeks before the President's assassination.
One of the heroes was Dog Jack, a Pittsburgh dog who participated in several major battles.
Captured by the Confederates, the beloved canine was later exchanged for a rebel prisoner.
"Pennsylvania's Civil War" opens Saturday, at Heinz History Center.
