City Continues To Dig Out From Latest Snow Storm

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The City of Pittsburgh saw less snow than some places, but travel was still tricky around the area.

With heavy snow still coming down, a truck slammed into a tree on Freeport Road, which caused the tree to crash onto the roadway.

Hours earlier in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, a car landed upside down in a lake and trapped the driver until rescue crews arrived.

"Due to the road conditions, we're believing at the time, the car slid off the road into the retention pond for the golf course," Elizabeth Township Fire Department Assistant Chief Brian Morgan said.

Schools all across the county canceled classes as road crews hit the pavement.

Pittsburgh Public Works Director Rob Kaczorowski said the main roads were clear by early this morning, but many side streets hadn't been touched.

"Obviously, a lot of the students are picked up on secondary streets. What happens if the roads aren't treated and the school bus runs into issues? There's some liability issues there," Kaczorowski said.

By mid-morning, in the Corliss section of the city, some streets still needed help, but Kaczorowski said to be patient.

"Somebody has to be first, somebody has to be last. We let people know there's a timeframe for us to get to everybody," Kaczorowski said

Those who took to the sidewalks instead of the streets, like Bob Kompier and his dog, Bella Boo, enjoyed the snow, but fear it's not the last.

"Mother Nature, she's going through the change of life, don't know what to expect," Kompier said.
