City Cab Hopes To Ease Stress Of Getting Around Town

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Getting around Pittsburgh could soon be a lot easier as a major announcement on the future of downtown cab service was made Tuesday morning.

Normally, the announcement of a new cab company in the City of Pittsburgh dose not have much fanfare, but a lot of the people KDKA-TV's Ross Guidotti spoke to said the time has come.

Unless you use one regularly, getting a cab downtown can be problematic.

"It's bad. It's not good, not easy, not fun and it takes a lot of time," David Hazlett from Oakmont said.

"I do ride cabs and sometimes it's hard to find a Yellow Cab," Mike Brown said.

Enter a new venture called City Cab. As its name suggests, it's exclusively for the city.

"Basically it's the extended Golden Triangle. So, it's Downtown, Oakland, the North Shore, the South Shore, Lower Hill," Jamie Campolongo from the Pittsburgh Transportation Group said.

It is clearly marked that these cabs will not take you to the airport. Pittsburgh Transportation Group is the force behind the City Cab concept.

They also operate the Yellow Cab. .

"More people play down here. More restaurants, more bars, more hotels. It's an emerging market for us. You have some other cab companies in the city that promote downtown, but they're expensive. A little bit of competition isn't bad," Campolongo said.

The competition made itself know at the City Cab debut as several different companies drove around Market Square clearly in view.

City Cab said they put six units in service with the hopes of putting 20 on the street. If the demand is great enough, they may add even more.
