Children Stay Out Past Their Bedtime For First Night

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It's New Year's Eve, and in Pittsburgh that means it's First Night downtown.

KDKA's David Highfield was downtown taking a look at all the action.

From fire dancers to crafts for children, Highmark's first night is all about fun, and maybe staying up a little later than unusual.

Aisha King's 3-year-old daughter made something to remind her of her resolutions.

"It's called New Year's resolutions," King said. "You write down three things that are your New Year's resolutions. Here is eight, be good, stay pretty and listen."

Lauren Haffner, who is turning 11 soon, gives first night a thumbs up.

"It's really fun," Haffner said. "It's actually second year coming and we love all the activities."

"We love it," Shelly Haffner said. "We think it's awesome. It's great for Pittsburgh, everybody comes out. The weather is a little iffy, but we're getting through it."

Inside events helped people warm up, like the shadow puppet show Leland Faulkner put on.

He tried to teach KDKA's David Highfield.

"If you move just the little finger down and up you can make it bark," Faulkner said. "Woof woof."

And organizers also shared their pride for the event.

"There are lots of cities around the country, even cities larger than Pittsburgh that don't have a first night," Kevin McMahon with Pittsburgh Cultural Trust said. "We're really very, very proud of this."
