Chief Harper Expected To Return To Work Amid Corruption Allegations
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper is expected to return to work today, even as a federal grand jury is investigating him for possible corruption.
Chief Harper took time off last week for a number of things, including the Jan. 16 passing of his mother, and also appearing in front of that grand jury as they look into possible corruption in the Pittsburgh Police department.
A statement from Pittsburgh Police Monday said that Harper took time off to be with his family "during a most difficult time."
The statement also went on to say, "The Harper Family is thankful for those who came to pay their respects and to those who sent prayers of comfort. The Chief states that the outpouring of kindness and support shown during this time of bereavement will always be remembered."
Arthur Bedway, who is already facing federal bribery, conspiracy and fraud charges, allegedly testified that Harper approached him about the idea of a sham company.
Both men allegedly discussed an opportunity to install computers and radios in police cars.
Bedway is the founder of Victory Security, one of the region's largest private security providers.
A former Pittsburgh City employee has already plead guilty to conspiracy in the case. The former employee admitted the accepting two $3,000 bribes.
Sources also say that Chief Harper has been interviewed by the FBI several times.
Sources indicate Harper told federal authorities he did nothing wrong. Harper has not been charged with any crime.
No comment regarding the investigation from the City of Pittsburgh, the US Attorney's office or Nate Harper's attorneys.
