Charlie Batch Talks About His Future
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Last season, Charlie Batch led the Steelers for a memorable win over the Baltimore Ravens.
It may have been the last game of Batch's career.
But Batch has not yet been told his Steelers career is over after 11 seasons. They took Landry Jones in the fourth round of the NFL draft.
KDKA-TV Sports' Bob Pompeani talked to Batch and asked him what his first reaction was to the pick.
"It was almost twofold," he said. "One, you're excited for Landry because I put myself in that situation 15 years ago. And then in the next sense, you're like, oh, I just lost my job.
So it's kind of, you know, it's kind of twofold. But either way, you know you're excited, but for me that's where I was at. I was on both sides. I understood because I knew what they were trying to do going into the draft."
Batch also understands where that leaves him in the pecking order after Jones was drafted and Bruce Gradkowski signed. But he's not quite ready to say he's retired.
When asked if he's done in the NFL, Batch said, "That part I don't know."
"I would love to continue," he said, "absolutely. The circumstances have to be right and obviously I want to be here. I expressed that with the organization. If that happens, so be it. It'd be wonderful, I'd be back for year 12. But if it doesn't, there's probably a high 90 percent chance I won't go anywhere."
Batch said he'd continue to live in Pittsburgh and run his Best of the Batch Foundation, which has helped more than 1,000 financially challenged children.
