Charlie Batch Looks To The Future For Himself, Steelers' QBs
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones with a fourth-round pick. What is the long-term future of the Steelers' quarterback position?
Charlie Batch shared this thoughts with Vinnie & Cook on Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan Tuesday afternoon.
Jones' arrival likely spells the end of Batch's career as a Pittsburgh Steeler.
"I had a feeling that it was coming, and I'm not surprised one bit," Batch said. "You knew they had to get younger, it was just a matter of how they were going to do it."
Is Jones the quarterback of the future in Pittsburgh? Could the Steelers make a financial decision when Ben Roethlisberger's contract expires in 2015? Batch isn't ruling it out.
"Just from the history of the Steeler organization, they don't typically pay players a third contract," Batch said. "They let players walk away, even if they're at the end of the prime of their career. That's not saying that it's going to continue to happen, but it has happened. Rod Woodson, Carnell Lake, all of these guys they didn't pay third contracts to. This could possibly be their thinking three or four years from now," Batch said.
As for his future, Batch said he's not filing his retirement papers just yet, and that he's a phone call away if needed. Much to the chagrin of some Steelers fans, Batch reveals that coaching is not in his immediate future.
"I've been playing football for 31 years of my life. I'm ready to do something else. [Coaches] work around the clock, and that's not something that I want to do right now," Batch said.
