Changes Planned For Annual Veterans Day Parade
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The 93rd Annual Veterans Day Parade will take place in Pittsburgh on Saturday, Nov. 10 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
This year, the parade will include some changes. In addition to the event being held a day earlier, it will feature a new route through downtown.
It will kick off at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Grant Street near the Greyhound bus station. The parade will proceed down Liberty, turn left on Stanwix Street, and end up on the Boulevard of the Allies.
Also new this year, the event will be a special tribute to post 9/11 veterans and their families.
"We are happy those wars are winding down, but we also need to make sure we always appreciate our veterans and their families and the contributions they make to our country," Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner said.
Iraq war veterans, Matt Mahoney of Greenfield and Sam McArthur III of Wilkinsburg, will take part on Saturday.
They said they are looking forward to the community coming together in a strong show of support.
"Whenever I came back, I was fortunate enough to have family, but a lot of guys that come back don't have that support structure in place," Mahoney said.
"I remember as a kid, participating in the parade as a high school band member marching. Now, just to come home and actually be honored, a hero if you will, it is going to be even bigger," McArthur said.
Parade organizers are hoping for a huge turnout. They said there is a great lineup featuring military vehicles and 17 bands.
