Change Expected To Ease Frustration For Route 28 Drivers
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Longsuffering Route 28 drivers take heart.
A tiny bit of your long nightmare is about to end. On a one to 10 scale of advances in the Route 28 project, PennDot District 11 Executive Dan Cessna says this is a seven.
Weather permitting, starting this coming Friday night, crews will begin the weekend transition to put all southbound traffic on the new driving lanes past the 40th Street Bridge.
Those two new lanes are nestled against the hillside away from the river and this change means – wait for it – no stopping!
This brings to an end the Millvale decision point where drivers decide whether to go left under the bridge or right up to the traffic light.
"They'll have free flow traffic separated from the [40th Street] traffic signal and that's a significant difference," Cessna said.
Once the southbound traffic has settled into its new home, work in the center area of the road will get the northbound lanes from the old Millvale Industrial Park area to the 40th Street Bridge ready to reopen to two lanes northbound.
That should happen in a few weeks.
By next summer the work around 40th Street should be finished. When that happens, all work on Route 28 will be focused in the 31st Street Bridge area and will continue for the next couple of years.
