Cellone's Bread Co. Expanding After A Century
FAIRYWOOD (KDKA) -- It has been a part of Pittsburgh for more than a century.
Now, Cellone's Bread Company is expanding.
In lieu of a ribbon-cutting, a bread-cutting ceremony was held at their new bakery Thursday morning.
The company is a shining example of a family-run business. Cellone's was established in 1911. The company has done its part to support the community over the years.
"There were times when we called for donations for community festivals, and we'd call every business there was. Cellone's, without hesitation, always donated," says Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith.
Three generations of Cellones currently work at the company. With the opening of their new bakery, Thursday was officially declared Cellone Bakery Day.
Mayor Bill Peduto says the bakery was a big part of his childhood. "I grew up eating Cellone's bread. It was always a part of our family," says Mayor Peduto.
Things haven't changed much over the years, other than to add some products and their new, state-of-the-art bakery.
The new bakery means more jobs. They plan to add 50 additional employees over the next five years.
The company's President & CEO says, he is glad to keep people employed here because he remembers a time when people were forced to leave Pittsburgh to find work.
"I grew up in Pittsburgh in the '60s and '70s when all the steel mills were leaving," says Randy Cellone. "I've seen families just disappear. You'd have a son or a daughter, they'd leave Pittsburgh and they'd be gone."
Along with the new bakery, Cellone's is adding a new, frozen product line that will be shipped throughout the country. The additions should ensure people will have jobs for years to come.
"I think today is what Pittsburgh is all about," says Randy Cellone. "Pittsburgh has turned around, it's growing. Families no longer have to go somewhere else. They can stay in Pittsburgh. They can find jobs. There's great opportunities, there's good paying jobs out there. And I think today is what Cellone's Bakery is all about."
