CDC Tips For Testing Your Water For Lead

The ongoing water situation in Flint, Michigan, has many people questioning how safe their water is at home.

Experts say there are things you can do to make sure it is.

Start by calling your local water supplier and asking for their latest consumer confidence report. Lead levels should be below 15 parts per billion.

You can test the water yourself. Buy a "testing kit" from any home improvement store.

Then, make sure to use "first draw water," that's the very first water that comes out of your pipes after sitting overnight.

Send the samples to a certified lab.
