Hazelwood Carjacking, Police Chase Suspect Sought

MUNHALL (KDKA) - Police are still looking for a man accused of leading authorities on a chase overnight in Munhall.

Investigators say the incident started as a carjacking in Hazelwood. A man got out of his car to open the gate at the end of his driveway when someone jumped in the car and drove away.

Police vehicles lined 10th Avenue in Munhall, chasing a red Jeep and the people inside.

"We received a call for back-up," Munhall Police Chief Patrick Campbell said. "Homestead spotted a car that was used in a carjacking in the City of Pittsburgh."

Pittsburgh Police said a man walked into the fire department on Flowers Avenue Wednesday around 9:30 p.m. reporting that his Jeep was stolen at gunpoint. Just about a half hour later, Homestead Police found it and began the chase with the assistance of Munhall.

"It's a dangerous situation," Campbell said. "The neighborhood in which that happened, there's very tight streets. It's a dead-end street where he went up."

And with nowhere to go, the suspect and another male passenger, according to Pittsburgh Police, got out of the stolen Jeep and ran.

"I'm sure he probably didn't know that once he got to the end, there was nowhere to go but over the hill," Campbell said. "I believe all the units here in the valley -- Munhall, Homestead, West Homestead -- were there along with numerous city units."

At least one vehicle parked on 10th Avenue was damaged when the Jeep came to a crashing stop. Meanwhile, other agencies also responded, bringing in K-9s to help with search. The pair was not found in that initial search. One young woman, though, was questioned at the scene, believed to also be a passenger.

"There was a juvenile female found near the car," Campbell said. "The city spoke to her and released her from the scene."

If the suspect is located, he'll likely face charges in Pittsburgh, Homestead and Munhall.
