Carjacking Suspect Crashes Into Garfield Home
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A carjacking suspect was arrested in Garfield Monday night after crashing the vehicle into a home.
According to police, the carjacking happened at an Exxon station at the intersection of 40th Street and Penn Avenue in Lawrenceville around 9 p.m.
The vehicle's owner gave police a description of the white Chevrolet Impala and it was noticed on Schenley Street moments later.
One person was still inside the vehicle when it was stolen. While police were pursuing it, the other occupant jumped out of the car.
The suspect drove toward Garfield and eventually crashed into a home on North Mathilda Street. A man inside the home was watching television at the time of the crash.
"I [saw] a lot of cop cars and a lot of screaming and yelling. A lot of it. I was kind of a little bit shaken just by the loud noise, didn't know what happened," Melvin Washington said.
Police used a Taser on the suspect during the course of the arrest. As a result, the suspect was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.
One officer suffered an injury to his hand while jumping a fence to make the arrest.
Two other officers were put in harm's way while trying to deploy a spike strip. Both had to dive out of the way of the oncoming vehicle.
The suspect's name has not been released at this time.
