Caregiver Accused Of Stealing From Blind Woman
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Sheraden woman is facing charges, accused of stealing hundreds of dollars from a blind woman she supposed to be caring for.
Police say they have charged Deborah Bailey with fraud, theft and receiving stolen property counts.
According to the criminal complaint, it all began about a month after Bailey began caring for the Wilmerding woman in June of 2013 through July of this year.
The victim told investigators she sometimes gave her debit and ACCESS cards to Bailey to pick things up that she needed since she relied heavily on handicapped transportation to get around.
The criminal complaint reports Bailey allegedly racked up more than $3,400 dollars in purchases using the victim's debit and ACCESS cards.
Bailey allegedly used the cards to take out money, make utility payments and get food stamps, the criminal complaint reports.
Investigators say they have surveillance video from a Robinson Township Walmart showing Bailey allegedly using the victim's food stamps card.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim discovered in early July that her bank account had been emptied after she said she gave Bailey her cards to make some purchases for her at local stores.
Police say earlier in the year, Bailey had told the victim she quit her job, but later contacted her to ask if she had found a new caregiver.
The next day, the criminal complaint reports the victim discovered her debit and food stamp cards were missing and contacted Bailey, only to have a family member say she had been in an accident and was in a coma.
Police say the withdrawal from the woman's bank account was made in Sheraden.
