Car Involved In West Mifflin Accident Possibly Stolen
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- One person was trapped in the wreckage after a car careened out of control, but this may have been more than just an accident.
A car slammed into a telephone pole on Interboro Avenue just over the border between Pittsburgh and West Mifflin at about 2 p.m.
Suzy Mac and a friend heard the crash and came outside to see what was going on, but they didn't stay outside very long.
"There was one police officer with his gun drawn that I saw, possibly two, demanding the driver get out of the vehicle," she said.
Mac immediately retreated indoors, but watched from a window as police surrounded the car smashed against the telephone pole.
"They really wanted him out of the car it seems," she said. "I was assuming that perhaps he was resisting in some way."
But Mac quickly realized the driver who police haven't identified couldn't get out of the car.
"He was stuck in the car. They had to remove him with I believe some kind of instrument – it could have been the jaws of life."
The driver was eventually taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital. The extent of his injuries isn't known.
Police haven't commented on how this whole incident started, but sources say there never was a chase and that the driver of the car was driving at accelerated speeds because the car may have been stolen.
The investigation is ongoing.
