Woman Crashes Into Walkway At Pittsburgh International Airport
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Crews are making repairs after a vehicle drove into the glass doors of a walkway at the Pittsburgh International Airport Wednesday morning.
According to airport officials, the incident happened around 7 a.m.
"About 7:05 this morning there was a vehicle - a woman driving a Toyota Prius. She was exiting he expressway onto the airport entrance and lost control of her vehicle. She busted through the gate for the long-term parking lot and then, her car went out of control and also hit the doors to the moving walkway," JoAnn Jenny said.
According to sources, a few things kept this incident from being a major tragedy.
First, the planters in front of the entrance did their job to absorb a lot of the shock of the initial impact.
"There [weren't] any passengers or visitors in the moving walkway at the time," Jenny said.
Investigators are not releasing the driver's name at this time.
"It doesn't appear that it was any kind of a medical issue. Apparently, she claims that the car wasn't braking and was accelerating," Jenny said.
According to sources, the woman blew a tire a few miles away from the airport. She knew about the tie issue, but had a flight to catch and did not want to miss it.
On the way, the tire continued to disintegrate, eventually caught fire and damaged her braking system.
Investigators are still evaluating the car to validate the claim.
She was not hurt, but was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
The walkway was not damaged and is still operating as normal.
