Truck Crashes Into Bank In Cranberry Twp.
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A bank employee suffered some minor injuries this morning while helping a child to safety when a pickup truck plowed into a bank in Cranberry Township.
Officials say the driver of the pickup truck lost control of the vehicle on Freedom Road around 9:15 a.m.
According to Cranberry Township Police, witnesses reported that the truck was headed east on Freedom Road when it crossed over the center line, went over an embankment, through the parking lot and then crashed through the wall and into the lobby of the PNC Bank.
"He definitely had some speed behind him to make the embankment," said Sgt. Chuck Mascellino, of the Cranberry Police Department. "We're not sure how fast at this time though."
Officials say the bank employee who was hurt sustained some minor bruising while pushing a 3-year-old child out of harm's way. Police say he was hit with some debris.
"There was a young female, I believe 3-years-old, that he was able to push out of the way as the incident was occurring," Sgt. Mascellino added.
The child wasn't hurt.
The driver of the truck, who police identify as 45-year-old Donald Dunkle of Cranberry Township, was injured and taken to a UPMC Passavant - Cranberry for evaluation.
"He was conscious but he was not coherent at the time," said Sgt. Mascellino.
Police say a customer was able to open the driver's door and shut the vehicle off after the crash. Also, one of the truck's tires caught fire, but that customer was able to put that fire out.
A structural engineer was on the scene this afternoon inspecting the building. Bank officials say they hope to have the drive-thru window reopened sometime this afternoon.
They also hope to have the branch reopened on Thursday, but there's no word yet on when it can officially open to the public again.
Cranberry Township Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
