Canonsburg Chairs Part Of July 4th Celebration
CANONSBURG (KDKA) -- Canonsburg will be filled with marchers and spectators when the Fourth of July parade steps off on Monday for the 49th time.
The fabled parking chairs are already lining up.
But this year, those chairs are part of the festivities.
It's the second largest Fourth of July parade in Pennsylvania and front row seats go to those who plan ahead. The first chairs on Pike Street went up Saturday – nine days before the parade. This time, the chairs will share the spotlight.
Main Street Manager Nadeen Steffey plans to watch the parade in red white and blue comfort as part of the second annual Parade of Chairs contest.
"Folks, if they bring their chair out by five o'clock Sunday evening, we'll be judging them and asking them to just pretty them up for the parade," Steffey explained. "It's so much fun. We had it last year and it worked out really well."
They hope to top last year's total of 75 patriotic seats. Meanwhile, everyone has a different way to keep those chairs in place, from twine rope to Christmas lights.
About the only rules for parking chairs are stay off the main sidewalk and out of the street.
"The chairs are left alone. People respect them. They understand the tradition of the town and they just leave them be," Steffey said.
The idea of sitting to watch other people walk and dance dates back to the very first Fourth of July, but Canonsburg does it better than most.
"It brings about 50,000 people into the downtown for the parade and it's remarkable how the streets fill up with people."
