Recent Crime Puts Cal. U. Students On Alert

CALIFORNIA BOROUGH (KDKA) – California University of Pennsylvania has issued another crime alert after an armed home invasion near campus.

The latest incident happened Monday at a home on Porcupine Way in California Borough – about a block from campus.

"This is the fourth incident where we've sent out timely warnings since this semester started," California University Police Chief Bob Downey said. "One of them was a shooting at an off-campus bar."

The school said two masked men broke into the home. Two weeks ago, two men invaded a home and shot the victim in the arm and back.

Gunplay was involved in all of the latest incidents. Last year, there was a fatal shooting at an off-campus party.

Students are becoming wary of off-campus crime.

"I live off-campus and I have to walk there back and forth, so it is – it's scary," Stephanie Wherry, a student, said.

The school said borough police and university police are continuing to investigate these incidents.

"Our job is to make sure that we protect these students when they come here and one my biggest concerns is I want to make sure that when the parents drop their children off here in the fall, that they can go home sleep safely knowing that we're doing our job to protect their children," Chief Downey said.

The police chief said they are hiring three more officers. He also wants students to be aware of their surroundings not to hesitate to call police if they see anything suspicious.
