Bylsma: Neal Has Concussion, Will Not Travel On 3-Game Trip

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – James Neal was injured in Friday's 2-1 shootout win over the New York Rangers, but the extent of the injury was not known until Monday.

After the team's practice at Southpointe on Monday, head coach Dan Bylsma said that Neal had suffered a concussion and will not accompany the team on their upcoming three-game road trip.

Neal was injured in the third period when an elbow from Rangers' defenseman Michael Del Zotto connected with his chin.

"James obviously got buttoned in the game, we all can see that. He's been feeling a lot better and feeling pretty good, but you just don't know with this type of injuries and we'll take it day by day going forward," Bylsma said.

Neal immediately dropped to the ice and had trouble getting back to his skates. He remained down on the ice for several minutes before being helped to the locker room.

Del Zotto was not penalized on the play and the NHL did not assess any supplemental discipline.

"I don't know what the process is actually but I know they look at all these things. I know they looked at every game and I know they looked at that hit and that play. So, I don't exactly know what the process is but I know Brendan Shanahan looked at it, looked at the incidents and obviously didn't make a ruling on it," Bylsma said.

Pittsburgh begins their three-game road trip Tuesday night in Carolina.
