BUTLER, Pa. (KDKA) — Three people were found dead in a home in Butler County due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities said.

First responders were called to a home on College Street in Butler at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The Butler County Coroner's Office said two men and one woman were found dead in the home on the second floor from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Two other people were taken to a local hospital due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Their conditions were not immediately known.

First responders had to ventilate the house before they entered. Investigators are working to determine what caused the high carbon monoxide levels in the home. It was not immediately known if the home had working carbon monoxide detectors.

The identities of the victims were not released on Tuesday night. The autopsies will take place on Wednesday, officials said.

The Butler City Police Department and Peoples Gas responded to the scene. A neighbor said three men lived in the home on College Street.

"It's sad," neighbor Manning Rose said. "I don't know what to really say about it but try to be more aware of what is going on around you."

John Hopkins Medicine said most carbon monoxide exposures happen in the winter and cold climates. Temperatures in Butler on Tuesday reached a low of about 18 degrees.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said each year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning not linked to fires and more than 14,000 are hospitalized.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas.
