Friends Remember Butler Co. Teen Killed In Crash

SAXONBURG (KDKA) - A local school district is in mourning after a cheerleader and well-loved student died in a tragic car accident Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, friends were remembering a life cut short.

Grief counselors were available in the South Butler County School District to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.

"I know she's in heaven now. I know she's looking down on us telling us not to cry, but it's so hard," Mallory Bateman said.

Alexis Summers, 17, was killed in a car accident on Hannastown Road in Jefferson Township.

According to State Police, Summers is believed to have been texting while driving just prior to losing control of the vehicle and hitting a tree.

"She's my best friend. It's so sudden. No one saw it coming. She's such a good person. She's so close to God," Bateman said.

Summers was a cheerleader at Knoch High School and Bateman said she was dating one of the star football players.

Summers was heading home from her boyfriend's house last night when she crashed. The football team is heading to the playoffs this week.

It will be a sad game for many to play and for the squad to cheer at, but Bateman said they want to win the championship for their friend.

"We just want to make it to Heinz Field for Alex. We all know she wanted to. We'll be cheering for her," Bateman said.

The South Butler County School District sent the following to KDKA-TV, saying in part:

"The entire South Butler County School District community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Alexis Lynn Summers. Active in school activities and events, Alexis was a positive influence on friends, classmates and district staff."
