Business's Elaborate Security System Captures Chase, Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A police chase in the Strip District ended with a crash that caused significant damage to a business there, and a surveillance camera was rolling.
It was 1 a.m. when an SUV came flying down Liberty Avenue at 29th Street. Then, it crashed right into a Guardian Storage building.
Folks who work there can't get over it.
"Disbelief, really surprised something like that were to occur," said John, a Guardian Storage employee.
It's clear that police were in pursuit. They were just seconds behind.
It turns out, the driver was just 17 and the SUV was stolen. Police say it was a high-speed chase down Liberty. And it was all captured on a sophisticated surveillance system.
"We have many security cameras around the facility. So, if anything were to occur to our facility, we take great care in that," said John.
There's an elaborate security system at the facility - nine cameras on the outside of the building alone.
The camera was still rolling when back-up officers arrived and when an ambulance came to take the 17-year-old to Children's Hospital after he tried to hide inside the garage, which now has a busted door.
The chase and wreck caused thousands of dollars in damage.
"Our focus is repairing the damage to the building, recouping those damages if possible," John added.
