Kids: School Bus Driver Walked Off, Left Keys In Ignition
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Some parents of students at Sacred Heart Elementary say their kids won't be riding the school bus tomorrow after what the kids say happened today.
Three moms talked with KDKA-TV who say their kids told them that the bus pulled over and the bus driver walked off the bus, leaving it running with the keys in the ignition.
One boy told his mom the driver walked around to the back of the bus and even to a nearby house.
It's not clear how long the kids may have been left unattended.
The mother of a 9-year-old said her son called her on a cellphone and said nobody was watching them.
One boy said kids were crying.
The mothers say the bus had apparently pulled over somewhere in Highland Park because a child was on the bus who wasn't supposed to be.
The principal at Sacred Heart Elementary says she was aware of a first grader being on the wrong bus, but not aware of any other problems.
The moms say the bus is operated by W.L. Roenigk. KDKA-TV was unable to reach anyone at the bus company Tuesday evening.
Pittsburgh Public Schools makes arrangements for the busing, but a spokesperson was unaware of the situation.
One of the mothers says she was terrified by what happened.
Another says someone could have walked onto the bus and driven away with the kids, or one of the kids could have knocked the bus out of gear.
