Bus Driver Evaluated After Megabus Scare
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --- It was one unexpected ride for those passengers abroad a Megabus from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The bus full of passengers arrived safely but for a while no one was sure how the journey would end.
It was Michael Dunn and his wife's first time travelling on Megabus. The driver pulled out of Philadelphia at 1:40 p.m. Monday afternoon. Dunn says there was a problem from the start.
"The driver seemed to be very aggressive, travelling at a high rate of speed on the Schuylkill Expressway, north of Philly. There was an incident where she came uncomfortably close to stopped traffic and having to lock up the brakes on the back of the bus," says passenger Michael Dunne.
Dunne, a board certified counselor in Monaca, says there were a few more incidents where the driver seemed to be jockeying for position on the highway at speeds of 65 to 70 miles per hour.
"Just outside of Bedford, we got into a situation. I was first alerted when people started to shout to stop the bus, slow down, pull over. This was on the turnpike, which is two lanes. There was a tractor trailer on our right and a tractor trailer on our left and we were travelling at a very high rate of speed," Dunne says.
No one said or did anything until one passenger decided to take matters into his own hands.
"One of the gentlemen on the bus moved to the front of the bus, sat on top of the driver while the bus was still moving, and was able to slow the bus down and steer it over to the borough," Dunne says.
Megabus sent a relief driver to Bedford who drove the passengers into Pittsburgh. They arrived at 11:00 p.m. Monday night, three hours later than scheduled.
Dunne went on to describe the driver as unresponsive. His wife says that her speech was slurred and at one point says she had a migraine headache and did not have her blood pressure pills in Philadelphia.
Megabus apologized to its passengers for the interruption with the trip and say the driver did seek a doctor's care.
