Bus Carrying Prisoners Crashes In Beaver Co.

HANOVER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A bus carrying prisoners crashed in the woods Tuesday morning.

The accident happened on Route 30 in Hanover Township, Beaver County, around 10 a.m.

The bus was carrying seven non-violent prisoners from the Elkton Federal Corrections Institution in Columbiana County, Ohio. The prison is about 45 miles away from Pittsburgh.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website, the Elkton facility is a low-security prison for male offenders.

They were on their way to Pittsburgh International Airport.

State troopers say there was never any threat of any of the prisoners escaping. A driver and two guards were onboard, armed with shotguns. The prisoners were secured to bars that were installed in the bus.

"Basically, the prisoners have been transported back to the original destination where they came from," State Trooper Desmond Aires. "No murderers, no rapists, no violent felonies, none."

Around 3 p.m., a crane and a tow truck maneuvered the bus out of the wooded area. Traffic was backed up for several hours along Route 30.
