Bucs: Losing Streak Grows To 5 Games
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — Pirates starter Kevin Correia failed to make it past the third inning Tuesday night as the Chicago Cubs rolled to an 11-6 win.
Correia gave up eight runs on 10 hits in two innings, getting pulled in the top of the third after an Alfonso Soriano home run gave the Cubs an 8-2 lead.
All told, Pirates pitchers allowed 21 hits to Chicago Tuesday at PNC Park.
Aramis Ramirez started things off in the first with a broken-bat RBI single to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. Tyler Colvin hit a solo homer in the second inning and Ramirez followed later with a three-run homer for a 5-2 Chicago lead after two.
Geovany Soto hit a two-run homer early in the third inning and Soriano blasted one out in the very next at bat for an 8-2 lead and complete control of the game, ending Correia's night.
Tony Watson came in and calmed things down for a period of time, but gave up two solo homers in the fourth inning for a 10-2 deficit. Starlin Castro added an RBI single in the seventh for the Cubs' 11th run of the game.
Aside from a Garrett Jones two-run homer in the first inning and solo shot in the eighth, the Pirates bats were silent, totaling just five hits in the first seven innings against Chicago starter Randy Wells, who pitched six innings and allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out seven.
Brandon Wood hit a two-run pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning to close the gap to 11-5 and Jones hit a sac fly for the final run of the game.
