Bucs: Derrek Lee Receives Arbitration Offer
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — First baseman Derrek Lee received a salary arbitration offer Wednesday just before the deadline to do so.
With that offer comes several scenarios depending on Lee's decision.
If Lee accepts the Pirates offer he'll likely receive more than the $7.25 million he made in 2011 — more like $8 million. He would solidify the Pirates infield and assure they'll have a mainstay at first base that can produce both defensively and offensively.
Lee is a proven defensive first baseman and hit .337 with seven home runs after joining the Pirates last season, despite missing time to a hand injury. He would also provide the outfield with some depth, adding Garrett Jones (who also plays first base) to platoon of Alex Presley, Jose Tabata and Andrew McCutchen.
However, if Lee chooses not to accept the Pirates offer and signs with a different team, the organization will receive either a first or second round draft pick.
Lee has until Dec. 7 to make his decision.
