Boy Suspended For Bullying Is Serving Unusual Punishment From Parents
NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- Explaining that she doesn't want her son to be labeled as a bully, Amber Carey says she hopes her boy is learning a lesson.
Gage Duncan, 12, was suspended from school in New Castle for bullying younger students.
His punishment? Gage's parents are having him stand on a street corner with a cardboard sign hung around his neck.
The sign says: "My name is Gage, and I am a bully."
"This is my way of teaching him that bullying is not acceptable," Carey said. "It's not right to pick on somebody else. He embarrassed them, so this is his embarrassment for himself."
Gage is in the sixth grade at George Washington Intermediate School.
The boy's mother and stepfather sat in their parked truck close-by while Gage stood outside with his sign.
Gage told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti: "I think I'm not going to do it again. I'm going to apologize to the principal, and to the children I did it to."
The boy's parents say he'll be outside again on Friday, weather permitting, with his cardboard sign.
"I'm trying to instill morals and respect more or less in him by doing this because bullying is an unjust thing," Carey added.
