Bob Walk: Time For The Leader Of The Pitching Staff To Step Up
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – Pirates broadcaster Bob Walk joined "The Fan Morning Show" in his regular weekly spot on Wednesday, and talked about the Pirates' seven-game losing streak.
In Walk's mind, there's one side of things that's going to have to show clear improvement for the Pirates to have any chance at turning things around.
"I think it's going to take some good pitching," Walk said. "That's for me what's been missing."
He sees Gerrit Cole, who will return from injury today to start the series finale against the Braves, as the perfect guy to try to ward off any further damage.
"Going into the season, I think he had established himself as the guy," Walk said. "Last year, when all the chips were pushed in onto the table, who'd they give the ball to? It wasn't A.J. [Burnett], the team leader. It was Cole. I think at that moment on, going forward, he was going to be the leader of this pitching staff. And this is a time he needs to step up, right now. He's back. He's healthy. I realize that's a lot to go on the young guy's shoulders, but it's the major leagues and it's what you have to do."
Walk joins "The Fan Morning Show" every Wednesday at 8:40 a.m. during baseball season.
