Black Bear Spotted In Moon Township
MOON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - There's been another black bear sighting in Moon Township and at least one of them was near a very populated area.
Moon Township Police are being extra vigilant and are urging residents to do the same after at least three sightings of a large black bear were reported in the area in the past 24 hours.
Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission were out Monday morning after the latest sighting.
Doug Haines was in the back yard overlooking a steep wooded hillside and said his dog, Joey, wouldn't stop barking.
"I see this black whatever it is running through the woods," Haines said. "I would think it was a bear. It could have been a big black dog or something else, but my tendency is to think it was the bear."
Police activated their emergency messaging service late Sunday after the bear was first spotted running across a Giant Eagle parking lot, near the campus of Robert Morris and the Moon Crest neighborhood.
"We put a reverse 911 message out across the entire township that went out to over 10,500 homes advising people to be on the lookout for this , not to feed it, to stay away from it, and call us and we'd coordinate efforts with the Game Commission to capture it," Moon Township Police Chief Leo McCarthy said.
No traps have been set for this animal at this time.
