Bishop Bosco Remembered Fondly At His Funeral Mass
GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- Bishops and clergy processed into Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg to join friends of the late Bishop Emeritus Anthony Bosco at the funeral mass for a man who served 17 years as bishop of that diocese and many other years as a priest and auxiliary bishop in Pittsburgh.
"We gather in thanksgiving to God for the time he was ours as the good shepherd of the Diocese of Greensburg," said the Most Rev. Lawrence Brandt, Bosco's successor as bishop.
"Bishop Bosco's legacy is not about what he did and said, but what God did and said through his leadership in the church," said Monsignor Roger Statnick, who delivered the homily for his friend of many years.
Statnick said Bosco brought administrative strength to the diocese but endeared with his personality.
"He loved a good conversation seasoned with differences of opinion. He loved to teach," said Statnick. "He would take on an idea and provoke a debate not to win any particular point but to clarify the issue."
And while proud of his North Side Italian roots, Statnick said of the bishop, "He was humble about himself, simple in his taste and style, and rooted in the faith tradition of the life of the people."
And it was that, his younger brother James Bosco said on Tuesday, that will be his true legacy.
"I want him to be remembered as a person who really cared about people, not in a symbolic way, not in a way because -- you got to do it because your bishop -- but as a human being," said the younger Bosco.
