Birds Of A Feather! Students Plan, Hold Educational Bird Festival

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A local park went to the birds today.

Twenty-five students in the Pittsburgh Public School system designed and held an educational bird festival on the North Side.

The 300 first and second graders from Pittsburgh Public Schools were all ears, watching closely, learning about birds at Allegheny Commons Park right outside the National Aviary.

They were taking part in a bird festival, which was created by 25 student leaders from Pittsburgh Allegheny 6-8 School.

The students have been working with the Aviary for seven months to put this event together.

The kids were broken up into groups.

The student organizers set up stations with hands-on activities focusing on topics like conservation and migration.

"They're going to do obstacle courses, learning about birds and the sounds and seeing if they ever saw them before," said Niya Ingram, an eighth grader. "They're going to learn about the food chain and create bird masks for them to take home."

"I'm happy… that the kids are going to learn a lot of stuff about the birds and everything," added Taylor Dunbar, another eighth grader.

Employees with the Aviary helped the student leaders with the project every step of the way.

They say it's overwhelming to see it all come together.

"I am so excited," said Trisha O'Neill, of the National Aviary. "This is a passion of mine to work with children, not only to help them learn more about their natural world, but also to help them develop skills like leadership, teamwork and just getting out here and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors we have here in western Pennsylvania."
