Canadians Enjoying Ice Fishing During Bitter Blast
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - You think you are cold here in Pittsburgh well that is nothing compared to our neighbors to north. This morning in Canada, they hit a record low for the week of minus 31. How are they dealing with the frigid cold you ask? They are going out ice fishing.
KDKA Radio's Bill Rehkopf was joined on the KDKA Afternoon News by his cousin, Shannon Griem, who lives in North Bay, Ontario.
She tells Bill the fishing is good, the catching is debatable, but they are having fun never the less.
The ice fishing season opened this week in Ontario and will run until about the middle of March, depending on if they maintain a cold enough temperature through out the season. Shannon and her family are not worried though, they have their ice hut all ready and wood stove burning.
"There are runners on the hut so you can pull it out onto the lake with either a quad or snowmobile, that keeps the wood floor off the ground, which allows the stove to keep the hut warm and not melt the ice." Griem says.
She tells KDKA listeners when it comes time she check the lines or holes in the ice you just have to suck it up.
"We layer up when we go out we have at least two pairs of socks, waterproof boots, you get the long johns out and put a couple layers on top of that make sure your bundled up and try to keep perspective that you are out in nature and having a great time."
